Listen To Mr. Thompson

He had warned her about the book. Now it was too late...

It was a chilly day in November and crisp, golden brown leaves littered the footpath. Bae Miller entered the dusty shop on the corner of Baker Street. The shop was a vintage store and all the displayed items were covered in a thick layer of dust. It was not her type of shop, but she was on the way home and didn’t take comfort in knowing that homework awaited her.

As she browsed through piles of books, Bae heard a floorboard creak behind her. She turned around to see an old man with a friendly face smiling happily at her. 'Hello, I'm Mr. Thompson, would you like help?' he asked in a bass voice. Next week was her brother, Leo's birthday. He was turning 8 and was currently obsessed with creepy ghost stories. She figured that this shop would be good for that sort of thing. 'I was looking for a book for my brother who’s birthday is soon’. Do you suggest any in particular?' she inquired curiously. Mr. Thompson smiled and waved her over to where he stood next to a large bookcase. 'Over here we have Black Beauty, Oliver Twist,...’. Bae lost interest and her mind wandered.

'Bae, come and look at his. I think it’s the book for Leo'. Bae couldn't remember telling him her name of her brothers. Odd. She turned around and gaped as soon as she saw what he was holding; a thick book about 35 cm long. Would Leo be able to read that? 'No thank you, I'd best be...' She started but stopped as she saw Mr. Thompson's face change from warmth to fury. 'You must take the book to your brother!', He declared sharply. Desperate to leave all these weird happenings, Bae agreed to buy the book for only $4.Leo would be happy have it in his possession. Plus, Bae didn't know what would happen if she refused to take it. As she opened the door, Mr. Thompson's face changed back to the kind features. 'I must warn you to never let a girl read this book’. Absently, Bae agreed.

She left the store and started to walk down the street towards her house. After a while, Bae became tired. She stopped abruptly and looked at her surroundings. She was next to an overgrown park that was unfamiliar. Bae sat down under an oak for a quick rest and pulled out the newly bought book. She wanted to make sure it was appropriate for her brother. Even though Bae denied it, she loved her brother very much. As she flipped through the pages, Bae began to realize that the book contained a variety of short horror stories. Good. She started to read about a dark shadow that attacked young girls and could shape shift into anything imaginable. There was a rustle behind her and Bae turned to check if someone was around. She caught sight of a dark shadowed figure slowly approaching her. There was no face and as it got closer, the thing jumped at Bae and scratched her arm. She got a tingling sensation through her body. When Bae looked down at her injury, she was surprised to find ink spilling out of the cut in her arm. Her skin starting to stain as it soaked up the ink. It continued to spread against her body and she began to feel weak. Then Bae realized that the thing was from the book and that she was its next victim. But by that time it was too late.
